A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH
                                                            For Grade 8

I.             Learning Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a.     Read closely to select appropriate details from the story;
b.    Identify the elements and features of the story;
c.     Determine the meaning of some words in the story;
d.    Accomplish a story map; and
e.     Appreciate beauty of life and friendship.

II.            Subject Matter:

Topic: OUTWITTING A CROCODILE
             (Kisah Sang Kancil dengan Buaya)
               A Traditional Malaysian Folktale
References: Teachers Module (DepEd)
                         Outwitting a Crocodile Retold by Chook Yoon Foo
Materials: Video clip of Lolong, and a Deer, LCD projector, copy of the story, paper cut -outs.
Values: Appreciate beauty of life and friendship, value creative ideas and original work, value of reading books.
Skills: analyze word as means of unlocking the meaning of the words, using one’s creativity and imagination in formulating the setting, characters, and scenes of their own short story.

A.    Review :

-       Class, yesterday we had discussed the elements of a story. What are the elements of a story again?

*       Mnemonics (Acrostic)

Using an Acrostic, the students are expected to memorize the elements of Creative Writing (Story) in a fast and accurate manner.

Super Clever & Cool Peter Pan Stood on a Tower

-       Super               -            SETTING
-       Clever               -       CHARACTER
-       Cool                     -        CONFLICT
-       Peter                -           PLOT
-       Trick                 -           THEME



Teacher will say:
Acrostic is a mnemonic technique which can be used to improve your memory.

(The teacher expects the students to memorize the elements of writing a story faster.)

-Who can recite the acrostic and the elements?

(Teacher reminds students that once they start writing their short story, they should make sure that all these elements are present and that their story has very interesting characters)


-       Very good, class.

B.    Motivation:
-       Class I prepared a short video clip for you to watch.

           (presentation of the video (lolong))

-       What did you see in the video clip?
-       Describe the crocodile...mouse deer?


-       What do you think are the attitudes of the crocodile…of the mouse deer in the video clip?


C.    Lesson Proper:

1.     Unlocking of difficulties

*       predicament –  difficult situation 

*       outwit -  to use cunning or trickery to                   get an advantage over somebody

*       clever-  intelligent

*       scare- to make somebody afraid

2.     Reading of story
(the teacher will read the story as the students listen)

3.       Development of the lesson:

-       So class what can you say about the story?

-       Where did the story happen?

-       When did the story happen?



-       Who are the main characters in the story?

-        How do you find Sang Kancil?

       -      How do you find Sang Buaya?


-       Awesome! That was correct.


-       Why did Sang Kancil tricked Sang Buaya?




-       How did Sang Kancil outwitted Sang Buaya?


-       That was great! you really do understand the story.

-       What do you think is the theme of the story?


-       Bravo! That was correct.

Enrichment activity: (role play)

Group Work: Divide the class into three groups and ask them to act out selected scenes from the story.

-scene 1:  Sang Kancil (Mouse deer) is running, jumping and looking into  the river while Sang Buaya (Crocodile) is waiting for him to cross along the river.

-scene 2: All the crocodiles line up across the river. Sang Kancil (Mouse deer) walks across their heads and counts all of them.

-scene 3: Sang Kancil (Mouse deer) jumps happily and annoys the crocodiles for he outwits them. Sang Buaya (Crocodile) gets angry!





          Ma’am setting, character, plot, conflict, and theme.




















•           The acrostic is easier to memorize.



•           Students started memorizing the Acrostic

•           Students will recite with confidence, speed and accuracy.

·         Crocodile and mouse deer
·         The crocodile is long and big



·         The mouse deer is very fast.
·         The crocodile is silent; the mouse deer looks wise.

•           Students will follow the teacher as she reads the story, using their eyes as they listen to the teacher



·         The story was so nice.

·         The story happened at the forest, at the river.

·         One sunny day.



·         Sang Kancil and Sang Buaya.

·         Sang Kancil is Trickey Mouse deer.

·         Sang Buaya was easy to outwit.




·         Sang Kancil tricked Sang Buaya because he saw some delicious fruit on the trees on the other side of the river.

·         Sang Kancil outwitted Sang Buaya with his clever trick.





·         The theme of the story is…playing tricks with someone is hurtful.













IV.          Evaluation:
1. Enumerate the elements of a story.
2. Based from the story, identify and examine the elements of the story using a Story Map.
       V.     Application (Homework):
Topic: good or bad experience with a person.

Applying the elements of a short story, draft your own story about your good or bad experience.
